The Sustainable Tibetan Communities Project will increase income by increasing jobs and training individuals in marketable skills. The project through its grants program will link businesses to growing markets and help establish businesses based on cultural skills and natural resource products. These skills will be institutionalized by strengthening local organizations to conduct development activities, not only in business and income generation, but in other critical areas such as health, education, environmental management and cultural conservation.

The Sustainable Tibetan Communities (STC) project recently conducted a Participatory Rural Assessment (PRA) in Tagong, Kangding County that identified community involvement in natural resources management and environmental stewardship as being of critical importance to ensure sustainable use and preserve ecosystem health. This RFA will build on the PRA findings to develop “bottom-up” management strategies that directly involve the immediate users of natural resources in the management of these resources and that rely on local communities to plan and implement environmental conservation strategies.

Organizations applying for the grant will propose procedures, processes and outcomes that design, build on, and promote community-based products and services. To achieve the project objective of increased income opportunities from sustainable and diversified products and services by local Tibetan-owned businesses, the grantee will work with project staff, local agencies, and community members to analyze market opportunities, identify weaknesses in the value chain, and identify training and technical assistance to address those weaknesses and create new, sustainable market linkages.
